Cropping off excess in masked object - clipping mask in ID?

I really need help with this, so I'll try to explain it again.

I have 2 colored letters (F and a) that sit on top of a colored box. The edges of the letters (F and a) hang over the colored box. I want the edges to be cut off. In Illus, this can be done with a clipping mask. How can I do this in ID?

I figured it out - Here's what I did:
1. Take the letters and fill with tint of color (20% of PMS 293). Go to TYPE>OUTLINES>CREATE OUTLINES
2. Make a shape smaller than the letters so some of the letters overhang the shape. Fill with 100% of color. (my shape was a diamond).
3. Duplicate the shape and move out of the way.
4. Place 1 copy of the shape behind the letters. Write down coordinates. (this will be helpful later)
5. With the closed arrow, select both the shape and the letters.
6. Go to Pathfinder palette. Click on INTERSECT. Shape underneath will disappear.
7. Take second colored shape and place it on top of the letters (use the coordinates you wrote down in step 4).
8. Go to OBJECT>ARRANGE>SEND TO BACK.
9. Group the whole thing together and you're finished.

I'm not sure visually how the object is supposed to look, but you can also copy the text (outlined or not) and then select the shape and choose Paste Into...now the text is like a graphic placed inside the colored box. To move it around, select the text with the Direct Selection tool (hollow arrow) and then hold down the Command key (Mac) and move the text by the center handle.
