I want to cut an oval shape out of a jpeg image. How do I create an oval-shaped mask, and crop ONLY what is inside the mask, to create an oval shaped image of what is inside the mask? I've done it before, so I know it's possible, but I don't remember how I did it!

Easy, go to the mask tool select the circle-oval shaped one; mask the area you want to cut. Select make object from mask, et Voila!

When you say make object from mask, which menu are you in or which icon are you clicking on? Don't I need to do something with the mask before I can crop to it?

After you apply your mask
go to Object Menu - Create - (1- Object: copy Selection
2- Object: Cut Selection )

choose from option 1 & 2

Then you have your floating object
