Look if you have a file called root under /var/spool/cron/crontabs
if not, create a new one. look also at the permissions.
Look at the passwd file to make sure you have a root user defined. Too bad I.T. is not cash business

Just had a similar problem and a colleague has managed to recover cron for me.
He has reset the password for root after login in as root (depends on whether you have tools such as sudo)
Concluded that the password status for the account root was amiss in the etc/password and /etc/shadow
