Creating new fields in Postgres

I need to add a field to a Postgres db. I have poured over the postgres manual and can't find out how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

The 'alter' command has some version-specific capabilities, so what you can do with it depends on your version. Here's a link to an older page in the docs:
