Hi,

Been trying to setup a home environment where mail is Exchange 2000 is routed internally.

Anybody out there has any experience in creating an internal local domain in Exchange 2000 so that mails will not be routed to the Internet.

Can this be setup internally using a mock domain called abc.local and thus email address xyz@abc.local ?

Any advise would be appreciated ...

Thanks !

yes it can, well i can actually, i have l.a.n with 10 or so clients on it running 2000 server, and 2000 clients througout the rest of the network. I'm no expert, but have it running to a degree. I'll give you my setup details.

2000 server, using office.com.local as dns name, have setup forward and reverse zones with dns numbers of my external isp (the ones allocated by your isp). I have exchange 2000 running for internal mail (the only reason i have it) and just setup internet mail on each outlook client as per normal, did have to make sure that each client has internet mail set as the first in the list of accounts when using outlook otherwise people can't reply to emails sent out ie(when people reply to email they'll get a reply to address of office.com.....etc that doesn't actually exist) otherwise, is working fine...except for a few delays every now and then.
I'm not 100% sure about whether u should only be running 2000 server if you've only got a registered domain, and want to host your own mail server ....etc. Still investigating it. This is only for internal mail throughout my small office etc, but is working ok for the moment.
hope this helps, drop me a line if you would like to chat about this...etc

regards

Thanks Zyn,

I do not have any registered domain but can I still go ahead and setup a mock domain for testing purpose.

OK, So u setup a mock domain called office.com.local and configure the DNS using your ISP IP address as specified above. I suppose you need to install a Domain, DNS, AD and exchange 2000 in the same box.

Do you need to do any special configuration to the DNS setting such as pointing your internal IP address which also serve as a DNS server ?

Thanks
