Creating a VLAN, 2950

I have a 2950 that seems to hate me. I am attempting to start up a small network. It seems that the 2950's that I have require a managment VLAN as opposed to an IP that I can just give the switch. Aside from the switch IP and enable password, the switch will be dumb. However, I cannot figure out how to create the VLAN, and the VLAN interface on the switch. I am aware that VLAN1 is default, but I cannot use that per the requirements for my project.

Any help would be appreciated.

Please disregard. I had spent about two hours searching for the answer yesterday before I gave up. I started presh this morning, after a good night sleep, and found what I was looking for.

So how'd you do it?

in enable mode:

vlan database

(vlan) vlan xx

This created my vlan. Then in the configuration terminal mode I went into that vlans interface and issued it and IP and subnet mask


(config) int vlan xx

(confi-int) ip adress xx.xx.xx.xx. xx.xx.xx.xx

Sorry for the sketchy display. I don't currently have a config on hand to show.

You don't really even have to go into the vlan database anymore , cisco is getting rid of that . Just do a

conf t
vlan X , enter

This creates the vlan and puts you into vlan config mode...

viper, I think you still need to configure a vlan interface after creating a vlan.

The IOS on the switch I was working on, it seems, would not let me create the vlan in config t. This puzzled me because I was working on a switch just two days prior that would let me do so. It wasn't until I checked the IOS version that I realized that it was slightly out dated.

The newer versions allow global config of the vlans. The older versions you had to enter the vlan database . The vlan database is being phased out by cisco and global mode should be used whenever possible. If global mode doesn't work then go back to the database.
