I have just reinstalled Sharepoint so that I can use Active Directory creation for users, I've created a virtual directory and extended it but now I have to create a top-level website with the following command line:-

stsadm.exe -o createsite -url -ownerlogin S65703/administrator -owneremail ian.clements@????? -ownername "ian clements"

I get the following error message :-

"The virtual server that is referenced here is not in the config database."

I've checked the config database and on the VirtualServers table there is only one record and it's for sptest.

I'm new to Sharepoint and so far it's been a nightmare. Help!

Hello,

Check in the SharePoint Central Administration pages, you can create toplevel websites from there aswell, instead of using the commandline, it might be easier. Sometimes when creating a new site you need to enter the FQDN of the server i.e servername.domain.com

Cheers,
Thomas

I can't use Central Admin for doing this because I'm using Active Directory creation and it doesn't let you. I tried using the machine name in the url instead of localhost but I got the same problem. I tried using the IP address as well but no luck.

In your managed paths did you create an explicit inclusion for the site you are creating? Remember WSS will not allow you create a site under the top level url. You must create an Explicit Inclusion for that.

Give it a try and let us know.

Not sure how to do that to be honest Burninator. What I did find yesterday after another reinstall was that I got an error message and that there is an updated version of SP. I downloaded and installed it and will be trying it out today. It perhaps doesn't help that the remote server I'm using is not on my domain and there is no Active Directory installed; maybe I'm trying to do this the wrong way.

Ok, I've given up trying to use Active Directory creation as I don't think that's what I really need. Now I've got another problem which I'll post in a new thread.

To tell you the truth I try to avoid HH or ADC whenever possible. Unless your in a hosted situation. It has proven somewhat difficult and at times made many a network admin bald.

If you do need further help, I'll check in later.
