I've got the following problem and hope someone here has an answer...

I've got a network with 1 DC on it. I have several member servers.

On the DC is all our user files, so it is not just a DC, it is also a file server.

What I want to do is to split off the DC from this fileserver. I need to know how to create a new DC, without having to recreate all the users, as well as not having to rejoin the domain due to the sids changing with the new DC.....

I'm sure someone must have done this, I just need to know how....

Looks like I know how I'm spending my Christmas Break.....

If you already have a server running 2000, all you have to do is run DCPROMO to promote it to a DC. Make sure you have active directory running properly. Check your event logs on your current DC and make sure you aren't receiving any AD/DNS errors. If you have multiple servers available you should have at least 2 DCs on your network for redundancy.

What about the original DC? Does it hold any special info that would not be replicated to the other DC's? I believe this may be the info in the forest??

Will the new DC COMPLETELY be the same as the original?

There are some roles that run on the first DC that you will need to move, like the PDC emulator and global catalog, if you are going to completely demote it.

PDC Emulator? Is that for Mixed Mode? If so, I have no NT servers on the domain.

As for Global catalog, what is it and how do I move it? I do want to completely demote the fileserver to take load off of it.
