Is there any way that I can create a false drive in Win XP. By false drive I mean a drive letter (say f:) that points to a folder on a local hdd (say C:\Documents and Settings\Joe User\My Documents)

I've tried using the subst command in DOS, however this goes away when I reboot. No I know I could tell it to do it on startup but I can't change the name if the drive. I would prefer not to use any 3rd party software. Would just like to know if there is a way.

You could:

. Use Group Policy (Start, Run, gpedit.msc) and insert a logon script with the SUBST line assignment;

. Use Scheduled Tasks: you create a .bat or .cmd file with the SUBST command, and your scheduling options include 'at Startup', and 'at logon'.

I am aware of these two options and have tried both. For some reasion when I attempt the -label f: "Joe Users Files"-commandin DOS it tells me that the access is denied. I am an admin and I still can't change it. However I can change the label of the c: drive. On win 98 I can use the label command on a substed drive (My Anti Virus says that the activity is not good but it can still be done). I know that Windows protects some files so that it is neer imposable to remove or change them, some spyware is that way. However I can tell the program to run before windows does and remove the unwanted file. I was wondering if there was a retalivatly simple way to do the same with the subst and label commands, so as to rename the drive before windows puts a block on it.

ADD THE "SUBST.EXE ETC...." TO THE WINDOWS STARTUP, THEN ANYTIME WINDOWS BOOTS UP, THE OTHER DRIVE LETTER IS THERE.

To CHOLEWINSKI I have tried using the startup command before. It doesn't happen before the win file protetion is started And the label doesn't work. However the Substing of the drive does work.

to bcastner neither of the options work for me. That and I'm not to good with the group policy editor.

I can't get the label changed on the drive. I got to thinking. The Check disk program that can preformed on the C drive but only when the computer has restarted. If I could put the command in the same place windows does to the check disk program then It would probably work.

I also think that it should work if I add a line of code to the autoexec.bat file. I have tried this however the system seems to be ignoring the commands. Wondering how I could get it to work.

You could try using or to put an entry in to run when the machine starts (its just a registry entry but either of those apps make it easy to set up) as opposed to when user logs on.

btw - there are 2 options in gpedit too - one is for machine, one for user in a similar way.

XP/2k/NT don't use autoexec.bat by default (though I think XP's tweakui has an option which will make XP parse autoexec.bat on startup. They use autoexec.nt (in \windows\system32 for XP normally)
