CRC ERRORS

Hey everyone,
I have an external hard drive and i copied some mp3s from my work computer and put it on a hard drive. Well today i tried copying the files off of it and i get a whole bunch of crc errors.
Do you think it might be the hard drive. I didnt get any errors when copying them to the drive.
If you have any ideas or any options to correct them please let me know.

One more thing.
I am using windows xp pro and when copying whole files from the hard drive to my pc it will stop at every crc error and cancel the rest. Is there any program that will skip the crc errors. Also if anyone knows why i am having this issue please inform me. I dont seem to trust my backups anymore. Thanks

Sorry wanted to add some more information. OK
1. Wanted to know if there is a program that will move my files from my external to my hard drive, skipping all the crc errors and leaving only them behind.
2. Would love to know what could be causing it. I ran chkdsk and no errors came up. Any other utility i could use and does anyone have any ideas why i would be having this issue.
3. The hard drive is a new drive with an enclosure. It is not a external hard drive that was bought.

SpinRite is famous for doing exactly this:

It's pricey but it goes at the data from all directions and won't give up just because it gets an error. Now it is possible those files are corrupt...external drives are famous for this when they are disconnected/powered down while still writing files or generally in use.

If the files are critical, SpinRite is a good investment. Plus, you will have it for future maintenance and problem-solving.

CRC errors usually happen when a drive starts having damaged sectors in the area it is reading. usually this means parts of the file can no longer be read, and it fails. Windows cannot tolerate the error and stops the copy process and issues the CRC error.

Jfilerecovery also claims to do this and is free.

Sweet. Any suggestions on fixing the drive? Is it still good or should i just trow it out?

I've had similar experiences with perfectly good IDE drives mounted in enclosures. After writing data a binary compare of the written data would show errors, though I never experienced CRC errors. Placing the drive back into a system showed the drive write and reads to be good, so I have to blame the enclosures for the failures. I now perform extensive testing before trusting ANY external drive.

Is it possible to remove the drive from the enclosure and mount it inside a system? Perhaps the enclosure's interface electronics is introducing noise or some other electrical issue on the interface (inside or out) causing the CRC errors. Worth a try.

I agree with Freestone. I would first take it out of the enclosure and install it normally into a PC. If everything looks good, and you can copy stuff to and from with no errors, then it is probably an enclosure problem.

If you still encounter errors even when directly connected, its likely a problem with the drive itself, either the connector is having issues (unlikely), or the drive has started developing damaged sectors, and at that point there's not much to do, since sectors cannot be repaired.

If the drive is still under warranty, you can send it in to the Manufacturer and have it replaced.
