HELP!!!

I have an IBM Server x230, model 8658-61y.

I was running a backup of the server and next thing i know the whole thing just froze, no Hard Drive activity, ctrl-alt-del wouldn't do anything, nothing worked... all i saw different was that in the Operator Information Panel of the server had the System Error LED ligthed... rebooted the server and would cycle through the hard drives but nothing would show on the screen not even a cursor...

Checked the manual of the server and said to look at the motherboard and see what other LED is flashing... opened the case and there it was... The CR4 LED was flashing... then the cover says that is something about the VRM...

Does anyone knows how to fix this?
Or whats wrong and what could have caused it?

Any help is really really needed and greatly appreciated...

Take a look at the Service Processor log (F1, System Error Log). Sounds like the VRM may have hiccupped. If there are entries in the SP log indicating a failure, call IBM's HelpCenter for a replacement VRM.

Thanks!!!

Went into the Error Log and found multiple errors...

Failure Reading IC2 Device
Power Supply 2 & 3 DC Good Fault
System is under recommended voltage on VRM1
Fan 3 Failure Multiple Fan Failures

And it just shut down again... GGRRR...

Can all of that be related to the VRM?

Or would it be more that both of the power supplies are bad?

Sounds more like the power into the box may be bad. Is it connected to a UPS?

Yes, it has a UPS, i also changed the server from location from the second floor (server room) to the first floor (my office) and is still doing the same thing even with a different UPS.

Hhhhmmm...

OK. First, make sure you're at the latest BIOS/Diags/ASM firmware. After flashing the ASM, go into CMOS (F1), and Load Default Settings (to synch the SP & the BIOS), then Save & Exit. Next, I recommend running Diags on the Power Supplies and the VRM. If Diags fails on any of the components, call IBM for a replacement (800 IBM SERV). You need to give them the FRU number off the failing component.

I just had the same thing happen to my X300 series. I called IBM because I assumed the VRM was built into the motherboard unless it's for the second processor, which I don't have. I explained the error, and they immediately knew the problem and the fix. They've designed a card that fits into the first CPU slot that takes over the function of the VRM. I then place my single CPU in slot 2. You know it must be a problem if they designed a card to fix the problem.. Also made me wonder what to do if I decide to throw a second processor in there..

As it turns out, what they told me on the phone and what they did were two separate things. I got a complete motherboard in the mail yesterday.

The card you're referring to is a processor terminator card, which isn't new, but is necessary in most multi-processor servers.

I ran the diagnostic program and it didn't find anything wrong...

Had to call in a local company to check it out... they brought a module that was supposed to be the VRM, and it turns out that the VRM is integrated into the system board.

Called IBM and they sent me a "new" (refurbished) system board.

Everything seems to be working fine... *knocking on wood*

Thanks Catorze!
