CR and pictures

I am told it is "impossible to get CR to display or print a variable jpg per record."

This seems unlikely. Could you please provide enough info to confirm or deny this rumour? Information is kept in a RH Linux 8 Server.

Do you know the version of Crystal? Basic information which should accompany any post for any piece of software.

Are you using code to write a front end?

Are the images stored in a database?

Try posting technical information:

Crystal version
Database/connectivity used
Example data
Expected output

Look at the Employee Profile sample report that ships with many versions of Crystal, it changes images per row.

Hard to help you when the only information you share is that you use a Linux Server...

Are these individual files?

How would you expect Crystal to know which file to use?

My cViewIMAGE utility can do this. You use it inside a subreport and it displays the embedded image. It requires read access to the image files so as long as your Linux server folder is accesible to windows.
