hey guys,

I'm using Winnt, I have a good bit of RAM in my PC, tons of free space, but for some reason my CPU usage goes up and down like crazy, if I dont do anything, its 0%, but if I even move the mouse it shoots up to about 50%, and then with certain app's open its almost 100%.....I dont know whats causing this, haven't installed any software in ages, and as I can see there is nothing running that is taking up so much usage in the processes in the task manager..?

can ne 1 help me.?.?.?.?.?

thankx.

What type of mouse are you using, and does it have software loaded for "features"? CPU usage is not the most useful tool for determining problems specifically because it pegs at 100% for the smallest things. Have you tried running any benchmark software? Does the computer "seem" slower? The good news is the task manager's CPU usage is at 0 when you are not doing anything, so you probably don't have any "bad" software running in the background. Let me know if I can help with the additional info. David Moore

A 'real' windows programmer could probably explain this better than me ;-D I took a windows programming class last semester and one of the things the prof showed us is how much CPU 'space' just capturing the mouse coordinates takes..demonstrating that especially clicking and dragging can temporarily fill your CPU...i know i didn't explain this well but I'm guessing that may be what you are experiencing?

Hey guys, first of all thanks for replying, and Im sorry I havent
replied myself but I was out on a call down the country for
a couple of days!!!
anywayz, I havent installed any software in ages, and it just started
happening for no reason that I can see or think of. The mouse
that I am using is a HP w/roll-wheel, the one that comes
with the PC. Yea the computer seems slower, but only sometimes,
and there is no pattern to it, it can be any software, anytime, actually its most of the time!

Yea I know that the mouse takes up some CPU 'space'!!!!
but it has only begun recently, and i have been working on
this PC for about 1 year....

so if you think you know anything that can be wrong,
please do tell!!!

Thanks.

PS....Im not really a programmer, Im a tech support/engineer head!!
it was just when I was filling in my info at the start of this,
I used my wheel on my mouse to scroll down and it changed the thing in the
box to 'Programmer'....DOH!

whew, not much to go on here. . .do you happen to have a virus scanner or a disk defragmener installed? Something running that could be trying to do something in the background? If not, the only thing I can suggest is to remove the HP mouse drivers (by un-installing them) and run the default mouse drivers to see what happens. If that seems to do the trick, I'd download the microsoft intellimouse drivers and install them. .again see how it works. Let us know how it goes!
