cpu usage 100 %

Guys I am working with a new Evo 310, win 2k pro with a 2.4 ghz 845G chipset and 20 gb and 256 md ddr. well the darn thing has been at 100% cpu usage for a while and there isnt anything i have been able to do to slow it down..in the task manager it tells me that system is taking up 99 % of the usage and if i start an app it subtracts from system...but my virus defs are up to date and they are saying no virus in the system..so what can it be? Now if i turn it off over nite it will drop to normal usage and if i enter in safe mode it works ok...but in normal use its like and F-14 Tomcat on Afterburner...

Is this a clean install or preloaded? try running msinfo32.exe and checking the 'startup program' make sure you are not running anything you dont need. Also check the event view and see if there are any error messages. Make sure no scheduled tasks are running in the background. In addtion, make sure you know all of the processes running in the task manager. If you dont recognize one, try searching google see if one of them is the culprit.

Note: I am basing my suggestion on the fact that the system runs normally in safe mode. Therefore it has to be something loaded when normal mode is booted.
