100% CPU usage can be down to a virus. Download Stinger & do a scan. You may find that you have the nachi worm virus.
When you goto task manager what proccesses are running. svchost.exe is the file that nachi is normally attached to, but svchost.exe is also a normal file to be running so don't think it is that automatically. If you have a firewall installed set it so that nothing gets internet access & see what alerts you get. I had the nachi virus on a laptop & found that nachi was causing the problem even though Stinger said the computer was clean. Luckily I could get into the hard drive through DOS as it was FAT32 formatted. I deleted the svchost.exe file & replaced it with a good copy. this cured the problem.
Check your CPU temperatures. A hot CPU use 100% (or near) for doing very simple things.
Have you looked at taskmgr? Load it up and click on the CPU column. This is the top of it where you see the text 'CPU'. You might have to click it twice to sort the CPU usage to be descending.
When this is achieved you will see the task that is using the CPU. - What is it?

I find this happening on my brother's computer. The program that is always running at 100% is services.exe. I think this is being caused by some kind of virus/IRC worm thing. When the computer boots, a command line window comes up, this never use to happen. In the command prompt, one of the lines reads:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\hidden32.exe services.exe"
After the prompt goes away, windows finishes booting, but Services is running at 99% CPU usage. I also know this isn't good. In his C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc folder he has like a bunch of stuff that shouldn't be there. I wish I had a list of the files. I'll try to remember, I think there is a Download Folder, autohack.bat, script1.bat, script2.bat. hidden32.exe, services, services.exe (Note: the icon of this one looks like a Mirc Icon).
My question is, does anyone know what is causing this services to start up at 100% usage and idea how to fix it?
