I recently bought a computer package with an AMD Athlon 1.4GHz processor in it. When the system starts up though, it only reads it as running at 1050MHz. Is this a slower chip, or is it just installed/configured wrong, and how can I tell? Oh, and as a question on the side, about what temperature should it run at (Volcano II attached)?

Thanks,
Nic

I've seen this behavior with incorrect jumper settings on the motherboard. I assume you have examined the cpu to confirm it is a 1.4Mhz.

I agree with denutz. Physically look at the processor. James Collins

Ah, I was just wondering if there was a way to tell by the settings, so as not to void the warrenty by playing around with the inside. The multiplier is at 10.5 and the external clock is set at 100MHz, are these correct, before I take off the cooling unit?

Just a thought - 100MHz x 10.5 = 1050? Maybe you need to set the multiplier to a bit higher value - 14 would be good.

I would assume the 10.5 mutliplier is correct, but the external clock probabily needs to be set to 133MHz (133 x 10.5 = ~1.3965 GHz)) Just make sure you have the PC133 memory or it will not work stabilly.

I know this sounds DUMB! but take it back to the supplier! let them worry about it! not you!

Well, it works with the clock set at 133MHz without any problem I can see, heat's not much higher and the . Still haven't checked the physical chip yet, heatsink's positioned in about the worst possible spot for removal, so I'll need some better tools than just my bare hands. And as for taking it back, I'd rather do without the 2hour round trip if I can.
