win xp pro exec w sp 1 installed, dont trust sp 2 yet.
p4 3.0
mobo - IBM
i gig ram
Home built system w same win xp pro running daily for yrs.

Computer keeps locking up. Task mgr shows explorer running at 90% and more, computer at 100%. I have norton av 2005 up to date daily, adaware, hijack this, spybot, stinger, cw shredder and more. I have run them all a few times and i did an online scan at computer associates, which found
some virii that norton didnt, deleted them, still have the problem. Norton says all is well.

Running out of options here, have honestly run all these progs a few times. Computer just freezes, have to reboot, never seen this before. Sometimes task mgr shows 2 explorers. I havent re-installed xp over xp, have had the same xp install for maybe 3 or 4 yrs now. I admit that i am a great bittorrent fan, honestly dont do the porn thing, healthy male here with weird attitude as i dont like degrading stuff on net, only like normal stuff, lol. Only pointing this out so you know i dont visit porn sites is all,not a rant. But, again, i do the bittorrent thing.

I did put the info from computer associates into a wordpad file but now its empty, like twilight zone- doo doo doo doo. Sure, i could have deleted it, so lets say i did. From memory, computer associates found a few infected java files, cant remember more as i had it in a file,
but there were about 6 infected files, all removed by comp associates online scan. Other on-line scans wouldnt work.

Any help i can get will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I had tried many different online scans since last week, panda and a bunch of others and they wouldnt load or ended up wouldnt work at that time.

Since then i have run a lot of av,spyware progs that i had already installed and been using for a long time.

All the while norton is silent, says all is well.

Then, last night, i went to Rav and their scanner worked. It could be that other online scanners may work but i did try others last night, just before rav and they didnt work, they were: bitdefender, trendmicro, panda.

So there is a long timeline here of a few weeks where i have been trying to rid myself of this likely trojan or perhaps a virus. Just a gut feeling its a trojan

Rav has apparently been sold to guess who: microsoft.

Seems like m\soft is either trying to take out the competition or trying to learn this technology to help win xp and longhorn. My suspicion of m\soft makes me think the former.

Also, havent locked up all day today, so far anyway.
It could be that rav did the job that on other could do!
I sure hope so.
I never heard of them, i used google to find an online scanner and the usual ones wouldnt work but this one did.

Locked up today, darn.
I have this puppy so clean now that adaware finds nothing, shredder finds nothing, norton finds nothing, various trojan horse progs find nothing.
Somebody please throw me a line. I like to brag that i have had my win xp running for 4 yrs. Used to brag about having win98se for that long too, lol.
And thats with me on this puppy an average of about 6 hrs a day, 7 days a week, and going to warez sites too, no porn tho.

I must have a trojan, just cant find it.
I do have system restore and goback disabled, by the way.

just a thought but do you have stuffit expander running on your comp. i had a major problem with this horrible program locking up my comp and when i eventually figured it out i could`nt uninstall it.i had to manually uninstall it by deleting it and run regcleaner numerous times to get rid of it. i personally would`nt use nortons as it`s a resource hog and as you have found yourself it does`nt do the job. i use avg from its free and it has never left me down. it`s auto-updating is excellent.

No, i dont have stuffit on board, but i did hear something about what you are saying, so thanks very much for the red alerts.
I had AVG a few years ago but it missed 2 viri that norton caught, so i switched over to norton, plus the fact i got it free, its retail version NSW pro 2005. I only installed the minimum as i dont like the system drain either.
So you cant win!!
Now i have heard others saying they have 2 antivirus, but, geez, i cant see all that overhead, i dunno.

Course, to be honest, if i did all the things i should do, i wouldnt be in this postion.
First, there is warez.
Second, i dont have SP2 installed but its because i dont trust sp's. I like to let them mellow a year before installing them.
Third, i dont install all the updates either.
So i am asking for this, i guess.

I wouldnt even post this thread but what gets me is the fact that i have run a ton of software that cant even find the trojan or virus i have. Not being able get rid of it is another as for some all you can do is reformat but i cant even find it! Thats what is bugging me.
The list of progs i have run is exhaustive, all the standard progs have been run.

thanks

If i use zone alarm to stop all net activity or simply unplug my computer i am ok, so something is trying to contact home base from my puter, im pretty sure.

I have stopped some progs from accessing the net in various ways, one of which is using the stoppers in zone alarm. I think i am gonna do some more of that in zone alarm pro , see if that helps.

Something on my puter is getting onto the net and once it does it stays there and uses all my resources til i reboot or shut it down.

I will try reg cleaner. There is a similar prog in norton I believe.
But i dont use them. Whenever i uninstall a prog i do a manual search in registry and delete leftovers.
When i knew nothing 5 yrs ago and i relied on norton i got into trouble, especially with the registry and win doc progs so i never ever use them, more trouble than they are worth, we all pretty much know that.

IN your reg settings I see panda norton trend ca and mcafee entries...trend was a internet scanning tool (it looked like that anyway).

download something like active ports and that will tell you what program is doing what and to where

BUT if you do have multiple av's installed they could be hammering each other

No, these extra entries are when i tried to get an online scan, most, like panda, trend, and mcafee failed, but RAV did work and deleted a few trojans and i had system restore off and also goback disabled at the time. System restore is still disabled.
I only have the one, Norton 2005 up to date, and it has found exactly nothing over the last 2 weeks, except at the beginning it found one and deleted it, and thats all for norton.
I got NSW pro 2005 free so what the heck, i installed the minimum to just get the AV part of it, course had to accept a bit more, you know the routine.

I will try active ports, had been thinking of that earlier.

Sure, id like to solve this, but i figure if not then someone who is having the same probs might also get something out of this. I figure i am beyond redemption here, but i also dont give up easy, have learned not to give up with puters!

Thanks

tbrennans
My mistake, i was actually thinking of something else, not active ports. Thats a much much better idea, im not even gonna tell you my other idea, as this is much better!
I already d\loaded it and will try it out.

thanks!

I am just frankly surprised how ill-informed and how ill-advised a comment such as this can be from you.

. There is no intention to "take out the competition", and any of the antitrust trials faced by Microsoft makes this an absured claim;

. "or trying to learn this technology" is also fatuous a claim. There is no one better than the team Microsoft has assembled for trojan, worms, and virus detection and removal in the business.

The question has always been: do they want to go into this product space? This will affect a great deal of third-party companies. And what should if anything be charged.

Microsoft announced three weeks ago their deliberate entry into the Anti-spyware and anti-malware market by stating that Microsoft Antisypware (based on Giant which they acquired) would be freeware for regular users, and that an Enterprise level version would also be released.

There has never been a doubt that for the pure antivirus side of things, that it was a Microsoft product that if announced would kill the third-parties.

But there is a great deal of frustration that the third-party vendors have not done a good job. And this is not a Microsoft reaction -- this is the reaction of end-users.

By the way, if anyone wants to join, its my group, just started it up. Its for buying, selling, trading computers and computer parts. Its not gonna be the same as most MSN sites as i wont allow businesses, spam, or rude people there except for me, lol. So if you want to join please apply and tell me you are from tek tips.
Thanks

Yes, guess i should have noted it was a "mostly joking, tongue in cheek" comment, i guess i figured people would just chuckle.

Its a statement saying that in the past microsoft didnt seem or appear to pay that much attention to the holes in explorer but now they appear to be doing something about it.
Still, in the end, i dont quite trust microsoft 100% as they had plenty of time in the past to fix these holes and didnt. I believe i am entitled to my opinion. Sorry you took it to heart so much.

bcastner, you have chastized me for commenting on m\soft. Well, i just read an article in PC World magazine,March 2005 edition, very end of page 124. Its basically about win media pc's and bringing them into the living room. The article is written by Dan Tynan, a contributing editor and he states:

"Microsoft may yet conquer the living room and more, but it'll do so the way it always has - with marketing muscle and bullying tactics, not necessarily with superior products"

It was the last part, "not necessarily with superior products" that i was commenting on.

So, again, i feel that i should be able to give my opinion without being slandered by you with these words " ill-informed and how ill-advised"
I dont want to start a war here, i just want to protect my rights without being put down. You and i dont have to agree but we should respect each others rights without the put-downs. I dont happen to trust microsoft and if you do, thats fine with me. I like you either way.
