CPU Question

Well, I decided to upgrade my RAM / CPU. First I upgraded to four GB of RAM and had no problems. I then upgraded my CPU from an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ (65 watt) to an AMD Athlon 64 x2 5600+ (89 watt). I have confirmed that both CPUs are supported by my MoBo.

Now, when the 5600 is in, the PC won't boot up. I get no display on the monitor and things just kind of hang although everything seems to be running. When I put the original CPU back in, everything works fine again.

I assume that this problem is probably coming from going from a 65 watt CPU to an 89 watt one. Does that make sense? While I do have a few things running in this PC (3 HDs, DVD, etc.), I have a 750 watt PSU.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get past this?

Thanks for your help!

One thing to check is though your motherboard is listed as supporting the newer CPU, is your motherboard's BIOS at the correct level to provide this support?

You may also want to provide motherboard specs, like maker and model so others may be able to provide additional help.

Thanks. The mobo is an ECS NFORECE4-MA (ver. 3).

I did flash the BIOS and the new version is 1.4j 07/11/2007.

After I flashed it, I was able to log in with the old chip but the new chip still fails.

Strange and frustrating!

If you feel it may be a power issue, take all peripherals out of the picture, leaving memory, video card and CPU the only things attached power and systemboard-wise.

Do you know if the newer CPU is good?

You know, I think the CPU is bad. I removed other peripherals and it still wouldn't run right. I'll just have to return it. Thanks for your help!
