So I have a Pentium D, socket 775 3.3 ghz.
I originally got a cheap $12 cpu fan/heatsink, its loud as can be.
I spent $30 on another, not realizing what I was doing, got another NOISY fan.
Anyone got some ideas on a good cpu fan/heatsink?

Thanx in advance.

Could you give us a few more details on your first cooler
and its replacement

sigh..Im at work.. :)
Someone suggested a fan with ball bearings, grpahite...
Ultra was a name mentioned.

I was going to say Zalman.

I got a Zalman case and cooler for my media center PC, and it is virtually silent, and the cpu runs at 30c.

Want pics? Here they are. :)

vcsinfo,

Another vote for Zalman, just be careful because that Pentium D is notorious for getting hot...be sure the cooler you pick is designed to be used w/ that CPU and includes it in its compatibility chart. Thermaltake Silent775 is another option. has a good selection, and can offer good advice on quiet cooling for a Pentium D.

vcsinfo,

Yes, the early Pentium D models are well known for running extremely hot (due to using up to 130 Watts). Even the later models would require almost 100 Watts, although they do run quite a bit cooler.

Like another said, look for the larger fan which will typically spin slower but move the same amount of air. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cheap quality fans/heatsinks out there, and you can't always tell them apart by looking at the price.

I like Coolermaster and Thermaltake.

Speaking of big....

Make sure you're not trying to put it in a baby case or something.... they're tall as well.

I checked stats chart for my mobo, p4m8007a. I think I have the 3cm clearance :)
But the mobo is mounted in a big case so I should be ok

Mine makes more noise than I'd like...I was disappointed that it did not come with a speed control like the older "Flower Coolers" did...but I am a REAL silence freak, it is still way quieter than a stock HSF...and cools wonderfully.

Its ordered and on the way, Ill let y'all know if it was worth it.
Now Im not a 'silence' freak, I just cant stand to go to sleep with the sound of a cpu fan humming away ven all the way down the hall with the door closed.. :)
Many thanks to all

Just run a chainsaw next to the computer---you'll never hear that stupid fan again.

Burt

well the fan is a beauty indeed. Peace and quiet at last....

I was going to suggest the Thermaltake Silent775D as well, but I'm glad you found one that works for you at least. I have a Zalman cooler on my Athlon64 X2, and they are very nice.

I was having the same problem, so I purchased a Zalman, now the noise is gone.
