Hi @ all,

Is the Passport CPU 8690SF with 256 MB (Memo Upgrade) and a higher Softwarerelease as 3.7.11.0 compatible ?

I want to work with one 8690 SF CPU in a chassi. The reason of my question is because i need IST/SMLT configuration with the 8690SF. Is that possible or has the cpu-modul a poor utilization for this features.??

THX

Hi HungryHouse,

thx for your answer.

can you explain the differences between:

8690SF
and
8691SF

Is the difference the sum of RAM or has the 8691 a higher CPU-Utilization ?

There are three CPU/Fabric modules for the 8600s.
The first two are from the first generation of
hardware (E-modules and pre-E modules) that had
8Gpbs interfaces into the backplane. As I recall
the 8690 was only out for a year or two when the
8691 came out and basically replaced it. I'm not
really sure what the upgrades were besides memory,
the 8690 can run current 4.0-branch code if its got
256MB of memory. My old notes say the 8690 had a
266Mhz PPC 740 CPU, 64MB SDRAM, and 16MB flash.
Originally 8691 came with 128MB SDRAM, modules
ordered now come with 256MB of SDRAM which is
the minimum you'll want for current code.
You don't need to buy your memory upgrades from
Nortel - its standard stuff that lots of vendors
carry.

A couple years ago they released the 8692 module
which can run with the older modules and can operate
at higher backplane speeds when combined with newer
R-series modules that have 30Gbps backplane taps.
The specs for the 8692 are: 333Mhz PPC CPU 256MB
SDRAM 64MB Flash. Last time I looked the list price
was was about $5K more for the 8692 than the 8691
but they're still selling both.
