For no reason I can ascertain, my CPU runs up to 100% for the media player when I try to play a movie file. I reinstalled WMP but it happens with QT player as well, I also reinstalled the video card drivers (GeForce 6600)but still can't play movie files. Was fine 3 days ago. Not sure how to diagnose further. Would appreciate suggestions. Thanks!

With nothing running go to task mgr and see what percentage is listed for "system idle process". Generally it should be at 90% or above. If not then some form of malware may be at work. Even with firewalls and antivirus and other malware progs, bad things can still get thru.
You could also tell us what other files are using what percentage of your cpu besides system idle process.

System idle processes is running > 90%

other ideas?

Thx.

Well, that rules out malware, virus, etc.

So now we need to know fairly complete details of your system.

cpu
ram - type, how much
mobo make & model
os, etc etc

another quick item - how large is your hard drive and how full is it?
What size is your swap file?
If you answer all of the above we should be able to help you out.

822430 - Windows Stops Responding When You Click a Large AVI File in Windows Explorer

There is a bug in XP in handling AVI files, where the file is corrupt or broken, causing explorer to read the whole file looking for index or property details.

It has been suggested to correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.

Also try these.

A suggested workaround: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key below and delete the default data (right pane).

For AVI's

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\
shellex\PropertyHandler

For MP3's

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mp3\shellex\PropertyHandler

Note: Make a backup of each key before editing.

Have a look around these links.

Select a file - windows stops.

Athlon 2600+, 1GB of Ram, Asus MOBO A7V400-MX, Can't remember ram type, 333 mhz speed tho...XP Pro SP1, 160 & 200 GB HDs both 60-70% full...

linney, all video files are freezing the OS, not just .avi files...media players will play audio files fine - plus all movies played fine until 3 days ago with no apparent change with which to associate the problem.

Thx. for your help!!

great, thanks, lots to think about there....now I just need time to do the thinking....will report progress.

Where are you playing the video files from? CD, DVD, hard drive, etc?

System Restore may save you some headaches, so it's worth a shot.
