The OCX is the older technique that comes for free with versions of VB up through v6.
The Automation Server is a newer more robust technique which is still used.

Actually, the CPEAUT32.DLL is just as old as the OCX. The one to use is the CRAXDRT.DLL, as the OCX and the CPEAUT32.DLL are no longer available with Crystal Reports 9.
I was under the impression that the Automation server started with CRv6, while the OCX goes back to at least v4. CR is pushing the RDC, and it has plenty of advantages, but lots of people still use the other techniques. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

Correct. But, to be accurate, the Automation Server was released with 6.0, but that was it's only update. The OCX also has not been updated since 6.0. So, neither of them take advantage of any newer features of 7, 8, or 8.5.
