Hi,

I've set up a CICS, and a Call Pilot 100. All went pretty well. I have some confusion over the setup of the General Company MB, and the System Admin Mailbox. Here is the setup.

*The Admin Assistant uses extension 21.
*She is the System Admin of Phone & VM System.
*She wants to use the general MB from the AA menu, when the caller presses Zero (and the call is not answered, Again on ex 21), and for overflow.
*She would like to have her System Admin MB used for when folks specifically call her using her extension.

I'm afraid that I'm not certain how to do what she needs.

-a DN can have only 1 mbx-
-mbx 102 is not typically used as an actual mbx.
-you can give a user two mbx's and have them alert at the same phone, but it requires a more advanced set up.

Are you trying to set this up for your own company or is someone paying you to set it up for them?

I did this install as a favor to a Church, I'm a software programmer, not a professional phone system installer. I read all I could about the systems, worked to get the CICS, and the CP going, and while it likely took 10 times as long to get everything smooth as the Pros here, It's working well. I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks.

O.K.- you picked a heck of a day to ask that question.(sorry luv2ski) My typical response would be call a vendor, and it is still a good recommendation if you want optimal performance and fraud prevention. That being said- I have one more question for you: are you short on mailboxes? Meaning how many different users onsite actually need a mailbox?

We haven't used all of the Mail Boxes. Other then the General, and SysAdmin, we've set up 5 (out of 10).

This could take many posts. Since it is for a church- if you are onsite, post your email, I will send my phone number, you can call and I will walk you through it if you like.

Disregard last post, as it was time sensitive: waited 20 minutes for a response, now I am leaving.
I recommend you call a vendor in your area. He should be able to set it all up within 1 hour, which should only cost a service call. Just make sure they are qualified in Nortel.

I'll spend some more time with the install PDF's and work to figure it out.

Not really FletherP… the (internet) vendor got his sale.
What's sad is it's another end user who:
-will not have the system performing optimally
-will not be properly trained in its use
-will be more susceptible to line fraud
-and due to these factors, they will probably think their Norstar is a piece of junk, and they will tell their associates / friends not to buy Norstar in the future.

Sorry I ruffled feathers here. I understand my responsibilities to get the system right.

What I didn't know was the best way to use the SysAdmin MB as the private mailbox when a person called the Admin's extension, and the General for the 'Dial 0' calls.

That is another thread. (Internet sales of tech products) A local vendor install-support would have, and does, give a product added value. Another case of customer going cheap. "You get what you pay for" As long as a customer thinks they can get free support spoon feeding of then a local vendor will and does get cut out of sales/support.

bkrike,

well said.

More and more each day this forum has turned into a place where non qualified "users"trying to get free support and quick answers can be found. Not what the creators had in mind I'm sure..

The secret of Joy in work is contained in one word- excellence- To know how to do something well is to enjoy it..

Cliffcor,
I was not being mean spirited or facetious when I recommended you call a local vendor. You have already done the majority of the work, and someone who is experienced can just put the finishing touches on the system. There are just certain aspects of programming that you cannot glean from reading the manual. They come after successfully completing several dozen installs. You or the church have already spent 1 – 2 thousand dollars. Another 1-2 hundred for a qualified Norstar tech would be money well spent.

I'm not sure how the question of the General/SysAdmin mailboxes got hijacked into a thread about other matters. I tried to be concise and to give adequate information in my first post with a descriptive thread title.

I set up the CCIS, the Call Pilot, established the mail boxes, Subscriber, Guest and Info, set up the CCR Trees, got the appropriate Set buttons programmed etc. I studied the appropriate docs for a month before the install day. No I don;t do this for a living, but I did do my homework to learn something new. I enjoyed the challenge, and feel I did OK.

My basis for my question was rooted by the Default Special mailboxes that CP sets up on install for all systems. The General and SysAdmin. I was thinking that since all of the CP installs have, or at least start with, these 2 MB's and that it wasn't out of the question that it might not be unusual for the phone coordinator (SysAdmin) to be the same person who manages the Genaral Mailbox (so is at the same extension), that it wasn't a big deal to ask how that concept was put into practice at other sites.

I checked the FAQ's, and if the answer was there I missed it. If working with the 2 default mailboxes in CP is really a big deal, I'll just do it another way. If my question was too elementary, as was suggested, I'm sorry.

I'm not looking for 'free service' or trying to ruin anyones living. I'm not going into the phone wiring business. I was posting a question, that I was somewhat surprised to not find a FAQ answer for. I was just looking for a bit of advice on a forum where I see questions asked and answered that are much more obvious then the one I posted.

More and more of these threads are turning into user bashing. I think cliffcor asked a legitimate question whether he's an installer (which we all agree he shouldn't be) or an admin person in charge of the user portion of a voice mail.

To answer your question:

The general mailbox (1x0) is used for all unanswered "0" calls. It may or may not be tied to a telephone DN. As stated earlier only one MB can be assigned to one DN.

The admin mail box (1x2) is rarely used. It's used to send broadcast messages to all users and receive inquiry message to the admin person from users. As above it may or may not be tied to a DN.

I think the reason you didn't find the answer in the FAQ's, is because someone who installs these systems knows how they work, and what can and can't be done.
Also what do you mean by phone wiring business?
There is a big difference between someone wiring up a phone line, and someone installing a Phone System.
Ask SBC or Verizon these questions and see what they tell you.
Gabriel

Thanks to those who offered advice, I appreciate it. I've worked out what needed to be changed, and the AA there is happy.
