CP Desktop Messaging Install Issues

Hi there,

Our IT department recently installed all new PCs in our office in cleveland. When they did this they re-installed any software via an image they could push out to multiple users without actually having to be on the users PC.

They used this Image to install the CallPilot Desktop Messaging software on the computers. The result: some work and some don't.

In the past, any time that I've installed it it has to be installed under the login ID of the person who will be using the computer/outlook. All standard users have their profiles locked for installing software. It has to be installed by the administrator.

Problem is the only thing that anyone can see on the regular user login is the CallPilot Player. It seems the required plug in is not installing into Outlook.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this issue? Has anyone seen this before.

What I have trouble figuring out is why it's worked on some computers and not others, and why uninstalling and re-installing isn't working either.

If you can help, please let me know.

Just a guess; but the PC that it’s working on may have Administration rights, and the other don’t just as you have seen in the past. Can you get your IT department give one PC Administrator rights and have the application “pushed” back out to it and see if that works. Also I have seen mismatches in Oracle versions cause issues with applications pushed to PC’s.

They all don't have administrator access. They are pretty tightly locked down. I've asked the IT people if they know of ANYTHING that could be different and they say nothing is different.

FYI you can install software as Administrator while logged in under the user's account by pressing the left shift button while right-clicking the mouse on a program to be installed. This adds an option to the popup menu of "Run As..." to let you run the install program (or other software) as someone with higher rights. Can you (or an Admin) run the DM software on a PC that a user can't? That's a sure sign of permissions problems.

Oracle has some "wierdness" - you sometimes have to change the permissions on the ora92 (or equivalent) folder, remove permissions for the user, click "Apply", then put those same permissions back in again and click "Ok". Don't know why it works, but it does.

Do some people have "Power User" or higher access than just "User"? They may not be able to install software but if drivers are already there (since the software was imaged to their PC), their Outlook may be able to use the drivers where a "normal" user couldn't.

I don't know if it makes any difference whether the PCs get their network address from DHCP or if changing the netmask makes a difference. The IT people may not realize network changes could affect the phones. I don't have a CP yet so I can't say if this is the case.

Are you using a different version of Outlook now? Like I said, I don't have CP yet but I'd check Tools | Options | Other | Advanced Options | Add-In Manager or COM Add-Ins in Outlook and see if you can manually link the DM plug-in.
