Hi,
Is there anyway I can convert an Access(97 or 2000) application to Visual Basic 6 or VB.NET without doing from scratch?

Thanks in advance,

Rushdi

If you are asking for a package to plug an Access application into the front and in some way, it spits out a working VB6 application. The long answer, the short answer, and the answer in between is NO. Like you said, you plan it yourself and you convert it yourself. Obviously, you will not have a problem connecting to the underlying Access tables, but, the forms will be a nightmare. There is no way the VB forms system even comes close to the enriched flavor, power, and ease of an Access form.

And finally, remember, when setting this up; if the project took 4 months to do in Access, it will take 3 times that in Visual Basic.

Just curious ...

What is your opinion on a project conversion from Access front-end forms to Oracle forms?

This is equivalent to comparing a Ford Mustang(Access) to the top of the line Mercedes Benz (Oracle). But some of us just love Fords and I love Access. I even admit to a fondness for VB 6. Both products allow my dog and cats to eat rather well. I have only worked on one real Oracle project, and really I was there for my understanding of Sql Server, but from what I saw of Oracle Forms and what I was able to read, I stand reasonably impressed.

My question to you is why are you contemplating moving from an Access FE to Oracle Forms. I would assume you are planning to end up with just Oracle.

Just like you, I love Access.

I have developed a few good apps for a client for over a year. Problem is, they just bought a "Mercedes"!

Their attention has shifted to their new toy.

I was hoping that you'd say something discouraging about Oracle forms as you did for VB. I need some weapons to dissuade them from using Oracle Forms as F/E.

Usually I’m not up against Oracle.

There are certain arena’s where Oracle is indeed the star; areas where dollar for dollar, it is worth every penny of a very large price tag. Data warehousing and Data mining are arena’s where Access has no reason to ever be. Sql Server can do it; but not nearly as well as Oracle.

Ther real distinction here is in the pricing. Like Mercedez, if you are looking at Oracle, the Oracle rep has the right to assume your company has big bucks. And your company is going to have to spend a lot of money to get a really good, but really over priced product.

I have one client big enough to use Oracle and I managed to keep him as a client. Hopefully, you can bring this up with your client. In terms of economies of scale and simple return on Investment, it makes no sense to use Oracle on those type of projects in which Access is most often used.

And finally, the killer point when I realized I had made a place for myself and Access in a corporate client who was obviously in love with Oracle. Ask your company contact if he/she has any knowledge of the cost differential between an Access consultant and an Oracle consultant. If he gives you a perplexed look; tell him if the Access consultant is going to charge him $200.00/ hour, the Oracle consultant can easily get $750.00/hour. If he gives you an incredulous look, tell him to pick up the phone and find out for himself.
