While counterfeiting has been around for a while, the practice has recently come to the front in the communication industry.

Here are a few articles that discuss the problem and provide some tips on how to minimize the chances of unknowingly purchasing bogus product:

The upshot would be to purchase only from trusted distributors and, even then, check to make sure you are getting the real thing.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

I subscrive to your links for Cabling Installation and Maintenance both through email and hard copy. I suggest that all that monitor this forum utilize this industry periodical as it is great for maintaining industry knowledge such as this.

dexman and PennWell Publishing get a star.

This area is really hot, so to speak.

They have found phony cable; that started a fire, CAT5e cable that couldn't meet CAT3 standards, connectors that looked legit outside but had no conductive material inside. Caveat Emptor.

The main supply houses, Graybar/Anixter/etc really check out and certify their partners. Others may not know what to look for. One of the fake items that really started the awareness program was cable (SYSTIMAX(R) SOLUTIONS, GigaSPEED(R) XL Cable, Communications Cable, 1000 Feet, No. 1069).

Be cautious. Double-check multiple boxes of same items to confirm your are getting what you paid for, it has quality printing and UL labels. The UL holograms are really tough to mass produce cheaply.

I've been getting Cabling Installation and Maintenance for several years now and would also suggest Cable Business Magazine.

They will not only keep you current on what is going on in the industry, but are also good for new products and solutions.

On the bad cable, I only buy from established supply houses.

Keep up the good postings !!

I haven't come across any counterfeiting but I would like to express my frustration about supplier's (CSC, Graybar, Anixter) lack of product. Sure times are tough; but, if it's in the catalog I should be content with the 3-5 day relocation of product not settle for the 4-6 week order from manufacturer.

I'm not a heavy purchaser by any means, but the last few orders for cable I've sent to Graybar have been filled fairly quickly (Systimax 4-pair CAT3 plenum).

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

This is kinda off topic but a sore point with me. I have on occasion had to extend a thinnet network. Rather than go through the cable build hassle I've gone to several stores to get prebuilt cable only to find that their suppliers had used 59U as media.

For those who have never used the stuff, 59U does not meet the ethernet specs and you are at risk of losing nodes as you move cables around or add segments.

Customers that do it for themselves are particularly at risk. You have to look at every segment and pull out and replace those with the wrong cable, sometimes replacing stuff that has been working for years.
