I am trying to place a countdown timer on multiple cells so we can track ETA times for jobs we do that we track on a spread sheet each day. Is this possible and if so how do I go about doing it.

Hi,

An actual timer will require VBA code (forum707)

However, if you enter the Date & Time in a row (ctr+; SPACE cth+: ENTER) the difference between =NOW() and that cell is your elapsed time.

I am unfamilar with coding you typed. Can you elaborate?

those are Excel built-in keyboard shortcuts for Date & Time.

ctr+; puts current date in the active cell.

ctr+: puts current time in the active cell.

Doing them together, separated by a space, puts Date & Time in the active cell.

BTW, Date & Time are just numbers faq68-5827.

Skip,

Can you type out an example of how that formula would look?

It is NOT a formula.

It is a Keyboard shortcut. Excel 102.

Try it!

Skip,

I know it is not a formula for the quick keys. I understand that. How do I make this work. entered in ctrl+: space crtl+; and hit eneter. The cell now shows the date and time as the current time. Now, how does the =NOW protion tie into this? I have tried using this feature and cannot make it work. What am I doing wrong.

Checkout the DATEDIF_worksheet_function (if it still exists in your version as my latest is 2k)

[tt]
=NOW()
[/tt]
returns the CURRENT Date & Time each time you RECALCULATE the sheet.

This does NOT act the same as ctr+; ctr+: because =NOW() changes with every calculate on the sheet.

Does that answer your question?

Skip,

How does that act as a countdown timer. I have entered the information exactly how you show it and it does nothing.

if you subtract the START date/time from the NOW() value, you get elapsed time each time you CALCULATE the sheet.
