Hello All,
I'm using XP Pro, Excel 2003, I have a list of values:
criteria1 criteria2 criteria 3 criteria4
1 blue lg easter
2 green sm halloween
1 blue lg easter

I want to sum all of the criteria (In separate columns) 2-4 that match the criteria1. In other words, how many of criteria 1 are large, blue, easter, etc. I've tried sumif and countif, but just don't seem to quite get it. Any thought or can someone point me towards a different method?

Thanks

bob,

This is a job for........

The Pivot Table Wizard!

Data/Pivot Tables & Pivot Chart Report.....

If you have any experience at all, (and you MUST learn if you don't) it could take as long as 15 seconds to get the results.

Hi Skip, thanks for the quick response. Would the pivot table still work if the criteria columns vary in length? Each time the data is entered, it could vary how many items there are.

How can I rename a table as it changes size faq68-1331

Use the OFFSET function in Insert/Name/Define to define the Source Data for the PT as DYNAMIC.

Thanks Skip,
I'll give it a try!

bdjb,

Just a small hint, if you are not familiar with pivottables. They don't like blank cells (or cells of another datatype).

Good luck!
Tim
