Have NT4sp6a server, PDC, dual processor. Only Server on LAN.

All stations have been upgraded to Win2k.

System is reporting file system corruption on DATA volume.

Run CHKDSK and get this error.

C:\>chkdsk d:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
This NTFS volume was created or modified by a later version of Windows NT.
This version of chkdsk cannot be run on this volume.
You must boot the version of NT that created/modified this volume and run
chkdsk from that installation.

Is it possible that the Win2000 stations could have modified the volume info / file structure on the servers drive, even though the server is NTFS4.

I can't run chkdsk to fix the damaged file system and I am afraid to attemp an upgrade on the server to Win2000 if the file system is damaged.

Any ideas?

Win2K does have a better and more complicated file system than nt4. I don't know of any way that 2000 can mess up a nt4 servers file system. My suggestion is to immage the C drive or what ever drive you have the os on and up grade to 2000. Worst case you will have to explode the image on C. 2000 should fix the problem with the file system during up grade.
