My Cd-Rom drive wotks fine when reading cd-roms, playing videos, audio etc. But when ever I install anything, the files which are installed are corrupted. I have checked the hard drive (scan disk/frag) and no errors. Any help would be so very welcome. [sig][/sig]

Sounds like something in the extraction is corrupt. How about copying from the cd to your hard drive and installing from there. Should eliminate the cd as the source. This can be anything from memory, speed issues, hard drive issues, controller issues. Do you get any error messages on the extract?
And would be helpful to have OS, and hardware config. [sig]
Ed Fair
efair@atlnet.com

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.
I have tried copying the cd's contents to hard drive, then installing, but no luck.

My operating system is Windows 98, running on a Pentium II 333mhz, 128mb ram, 7.8GB Seagate hard drive. (more detailed information can be given if you want)

What happens is: When I install something from CD, either during the install process, the usual

'Windows has performed an illegal operation... Details or Close...'

error box will come up or if the files do get installed, the program won't function properly, usually displaying the same error box when I start the programe up.

I have recently had a new motherboard fitted, but no other new components.

Does this happen with many different titles of software or one particular one?

The fact that you can watch videos says loads about speed, transfer of data to HD, even encoding/decoding... so this is a bit of a stumper.

If you don't mind getting dirty, and maybe have computer friends; start trying to eliminate items involved with the process. Can you swap a CD Rom drive with a friends? Does it work? Can you put another HD in the system and does it work? Change you data cable (really don't think that's it) but you have to check everything. Something is breaking down the process.

Good luck, let me know the outcome.
Peace

I have problems with Roxio 5 corrupting CD-ROM read. File CRC are different with EZCD/DCD installed. Not yet resolved, except to remove roxio.

Also see Micrtosoft support Q270008 about removing roxio :( makes CD-roms dissappear, fix: edit registry ):
