Corrupt Office Docs

Im trying to open Office documents and recently they have become completely garbled. Goes across the board, from word to ppoint.
They have recently had an upgrade from 97 to XP Office and do not really have a sufficient av structure.
Is this a virus?

Any help mucho appreciated.

Check for virus' although if every file is affected, then it might be something more than a virus....

Can you describe what happened (other than the upgrade) that may have caused this problem?

Im just about to try scanning the lot from floppy with new dats, just to see... as its a network thats supported from outside i dont really know what else has happened. It looks almost like the docs have been opened in OXP and then someones trying to open it in O97 - hence the garbled bit. Cant be more descript than that unfortunately... it isnt affecting every document cos some still open.
