Hi there - I have a Win 98 machine that in my opinion my have a corrupt explorer.exe. The user used a McAfee uninstaller to get rid of some programs his son put on the computer like Kaza, Gator etc. After rebooting they got error
Explorer.exe caused an invalid page fault in explorer.exe at 0157F: 00401F31

I have tried just about everything I have found to try from the knowledge base like extracting clean dlls from the cd, seeing if an old copy of explorer in c: this machine was never upgraded from win95. I have tried modifying the system.ini file to load winfile.exe and tried to install IE 6, cd won't run in the winfile mode. Computer does not have access to the network or internet to download a copy of IE 6 and install it.

Anyone have any other ideas? I was planning to get files on to a zip disk and reformat and reinstall everything, but was hoping for a much easier solution. Thanks!

...but after rereading your post, methinks I offer the redundant.
Sorry...

Look in the System.ini file again and see if there is
[Boot]
Shell=Explorer.exe

Have you tried the IE repair tool in system information.
also try uninstall and reinstall thru add/remove programs.LOL

Yes tried the fix in the article mentioned above, I changed system.ini shell= to winfile.exe so I can get access to the files on the computer and the cd drive it did say shell=explorer.exe until then, and windows won't even load it gets to the enter windows password screen and then you get the error, can you add and remove programs in safe mode. I have even tried reloading Windows 98. I have not tried the IE repair tool, I'll look into that - thanks!

Ok can not try IE repair tool in system information, because I can't get windows to load, not even in safe mode :-(
