Does anyone know what the correct (accepted) fan speed on a P4 2.8ghz is to propely cool the CPU? I have a P4C800 deluxe and Asus Probe reports the cpu fan speed at 2400. The reason I ask is that for some unknow reason, my cpu now idles at 55c. It use to idle at 38c. I have 3 case fans, one of which is on the side of the tower that is directing outside air directly into the area of the cpu. My cpu is overclocked from 2.8 to 3.08ghz. and has been that way for 2 years.
If this is the proper fan speed, any ideas why all of a sudden, the cpu is running hotter?

It could be a bad battery that is changing only the one parameter in your bios, i suppose. But it think that needs to be verified. One would normally expect that if the problem were the battery then other bios settings would be changed as well. Maybe check with intel on that.
Or just change the battery.

I guess I will bite the bullet and remove everything to get to the battery...however, the strange thing is that nothing actually changes in the bios. When ever the cpu reduces speeds, it shows in the bios but when I go to the parameters, they are all still set correctly...it is as if the cpu is not paying attention to what the bios is telling it to do. Plus, how could a battery cause the system to run so hot?
This is really getting crazy.

I agree with you. Its just that a battery can be had for a buck and it gets ones item out of the way. Actually all you really need to do is test the battery and make sure its at 1.5 volts. It just gets this out of the way as the source of the problem is all. I dont even think it is the battery at this point, but stranger things have happened, so you never know.

Personally, i think maybe some time spent at the intel website may put you on the right path, but its only a guess as i dont know the answer. Have a look there at least until someone else comes up with the answer for you, lol.

One thing i can suggest is to consider disabling Asus probe and see if that helps you. There could be a problem with the software. Again, just a thought but worth trying and it could be the answer, who knows until they try?
Its obvious some program or hardware believes your cpu is overheating and its throttling it down. So start with the Asus probe? Seems reasonable to me?

Thanks, but Probe is not being automatically loaded. Only on demand. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and suggestions, but since nothing seems to make a difference (or make sense)I guess I will let the cpu run hot till it either corrects itself (unlikely) or finally burns up (more likely).

I've contacted the good people at Intel and their tech support thinks that my CPU is going bad. Since I only buy retail, just for this type of reason, they are going to replace it at no charge. Hopefully, when the new one comes in, my computer life can get back to normal.
I'll try to let you know when it is installed.
