Corel Draw/Photo Paint transparency 1

Hi;
I appreciate any help anyone can give on this issue. I have a normal bmp or jpg image imported into Corel Draw (X3). Imagine that the image is a duck with a white backgroung. I want to remove the white background so that I can make a vector outline around the duck, retaining the internal image of the duck.
I used to be able to remove the background in Photoshop by using the magic wand to select the background, delete it, and then save the inverse selection,pasting it into a new layer, eliminating the original layer and then saving as a tiff file with transparency. When I try it now, importing the resulting tiff image into Corel Draw bombs the program.

Essentially it is the same thing in PP but try putting image into Draw as is and then Power Tracing, losing the background that way and don't ignor the boundary tool for items which need no 'middle detail'.

Thanks-have tried the things you mentioned.The boundary tool just puts an outline around the whole area containing the image ( a rectangle). Is this tool working properly?

Power tracing makes too many nodes/objects that have to be manually removed and requires manually combining the individual elements of the outline.

To clarify, I want to remove the background and then make a vector outline around the object with no internal traces.

Another option is to right-click on the imported image, open the duck in Photopaint. Mask the white background with either of the following methods:

1.) with the magic wand mask tool, select the white background, invert the mask, and make a new object of the duck. Delete the "object 1" or "background object" that has the duck and white background, leave the new object

2.) Use the "Cutout Lab" (Image > Cutout Lab) which works similarly to the above method -only in this case you Paint on your outline mask, then edit the "boundry" area that you just painted to get exactly what you need.

3.) Use the Lasso Mask tool coupled with the Mask Brush tool. Create a new object once the mask is how you like.

When the duck is removed from the background, and the background deleted - X out of PP and it will prompt you to save the changes in the open Corel Draw file - click YES.

Now your Duck is in the Corel Draw file as a bitmap with no background. You can either launch Corel Trace, or continue with the Power Tracing options above.


From the sounds of things, you are almost looking for a wireframe outline of the duck silhouette. If this is so, you might be able to just trace around the outline of the duck. Or you could always fill the duck with balck paint before closing out of PP.

Otherwise, if you are looking for a "cartoon fill" of the duck (basically like what you would color in as a kid in a coloring book) there are other methods. I haven't found a good EASY way to do this, as the tracing mehod always leaves extra lines and objects not readily seen until converted to "no fill" or Wireframe preview mode. It seems that one of the older versions of Corel (5 or 6) used to offer that as an option - but I may be confused with another corel product...something like Corel Print House, or something like that....


If this is your desired effect, maybe someone else can offer ideas on how to easily acheive this result.

Try to modify the duck picture in PhotoShop and save to .PSD with one layer. Where the background is transparent.
Then just import the .psd into Corel Draw. and there you have it.

This is how i usually deal with this problem
1: import the jpg to corel draw
2: trace the object (duck)
3: power clip the jpg into the vector trace line
4: optional - you can export the picture as gif and use it on different color/pattern backgrounds
