Cordless/Wireless Options 1

We have a technician who needs to move between rooms, which are in close proximity of one another, when troubleshooting a problem with a vendor on the phone. He doesn't care if he gets a cordless phone or wireless headset -- just as long as he is mobile. We have a Definity G3 system with 6400 Series (6408D+, 6416D+, & 6424D+) digital phones. What is my best option?

I've done some research on the internet, and it seems that the two best options are as follows:

(1) There is an Avaya LKA10 Cordless Headset that is compatible with our system. Since he has a 6408D+ phone, a Handset Lifter would be required. The cost for the two would be a little over $400.

(2) There is a Plantronics CT10 Cordless Headset that is compatible with our Definity and works on a single-line analog port (TN742, TN746, TN2793, TN793 series)...We have TN793, so this should work. We would have to get a technician to change his line from a digital port to an analog port...This isn't a big deal, because we need to get a technician out here for other work anyway. But, his 6408D+ digital phone wouldn't work on an analog port. Can his line be put on a hybrid port (TN762) and work okay?

Is there any option(s) I missed?

We purchased a nice 900MHZ cordless phone and installed it on a analog port in the tech area. This was completely seperate from the individual tech's phones. If a tech received a call and needed to be mobile they would transfer the call to this cordless phone. If they were going to be away from their desk and expecting a call they could call forward their phone to the cordless and carry it with them. This gives the option of more than one person taking advantage of being able to use the cordless option. It is also nice to have a spare phone in the tech area to test vectors and other telecom operations with.
I think we picked up a Panasonic 900 MHZ at Best Buy for less than $100. Of course after other departments see this setup be perpared to add other cordless phones for them too.
If you go out and pick up a jack splitter adapter and plug it into the tech's wall jack you can connect the analog phone to one of the unused pairs in the existing cable also. No need to run new cable. Your 6400 series phones are using the Blue pair and the splitter will break out the Brown pair. Connect the analog port to the Brown pair in the telco room and plug the new analog phone into the secondary jack of the splitter. Just DO NOT get the jacks mixed up. Those digital ports do bad things to analog devices!
 
Get the Plantronics CA10 cordless headset (not the CT10) which works with digital phones. I have about 20 phones in my center that uses them. Price should be $200 plus the handset lifter ($60). A little cheaper than the Avaya equipment plus they can keep their phone/line the same. Besides, all Avaya does is take the Plantronics equipment, slap their logo on it and charges you double.... The LKA10 is the CA10.
 
We have used both setup's and they both work just fine. One thing we did do is setup a coverage answer group so that both the primary ext and the cordless phone ring at the same time. That way they get there calls if there out with the cordless too. I personally have one of the plantronic CA10's with the handset lifter. It's nice to have the headset when doing technical work so you can use both your hands.

Hey Don, if the cordless headset doesn't work...If you have the license for it you can set up a xmobile station that goes to his cell phone. Add a x ported station with a coverage path of 99 rings. Then add a xmobile station for the new x ported station. You can add a brdg-appr to his current station of the xported station. Then all he would need to do it transfer the vendor to the x ported station and pick it up with his cell phone. The call remains on the x ported call appr you bridged to his station as well. I found the wireless headsets caused problems with our wireless network stuff and visa versa...just an idea. /me ends rant.
