Is there any way when copying an item in In Design to also copy it's X Y co-ordinates?

I am building a 100 page magazine and there are lots of items that need to appear in the same place on multiple pages. I would like in Design to also copy the exact position on the page so that when I paste it onto the next page it sits exactly where it should - at the moment I have to take a note of the X Y position and key this in manually into the pasted item's transform box.

I know that Fireworks and other software can do this so is it possible in ID?

Many thanks,

You've got at least two options:

1. copy an item (or items) to the clipboard and then paste using the Paste In Place command on the Edit menu...the whole point of this command is to use the coordinates from the page of origin.

2. If you're in a situation where you're pasting items over and over again, then I'd recommend putting the items in an InDesign library, either separately or as a group depending on your needs. You can shift or cmd/ctrl + select multiple items in a library, so if you're copying and pasting different combinations of objects, you'd want to add them to the library as separate items.

Once selected, if you use the Place items command on the library fly-out menu, the items will be dropped on the page using their original coordinates (this would be in contrast to just dragging and dropping them out of th library).

So, either method will get you what you want, but if you're copying the same items over and over again, then use a library.

I would suggest that you make a Master Page for this, placing an empty image box where you want it located.

...you can also copy from one page and paste using "alt-control-shift-v" onto a new page and it will place the copied objects exactly where they were on the original page.
