I tried installing Windows Xp on my new Maxtor 200GB but everytime I try to boot from the XP CD it says "NTLDR is missing".

I also tried using XCOPY but after it's done and I try to boot from the new HD it says windows/system/ is damaged or something and to press r to repair with my XP CD but again for some reason I can't boot from my XP CD anyomre!!!

Now, I got Partition Magic but have absolutely no idea what to do with it.

So if anyone has a solution that would help me at least get to install windows xp on it or at best just copy every file and boot from the new HD I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

You can't just copy files from one hard drive to another - certainly not by using xcopy! You need to clone the old drive to the new one. There are several programs that will do this. I am going to suggest just one of them for the sake of simplicity. Partition Magic may well do the same - but I don't think it does. I am not familiar with it.

Go to the Acronis website ( and download trueimage. Follow the instructions for copying a hard drive to a new hard drive (cloning). I think the trial version may suffice - but it is not expensive. There are options to keep the old partition size (giving you the option of making a 2nd partition on the drive later) or to use the whole of the new disk (larger partition).

Once you have cloned the drive you can change the boot order in the BIOS to boot the new drive. Or, remove the old drive from the system. It all depends how you have cabled the drives up and what you want to do. Drive jumpers will have to be set correctly as well.

You are posting the same basic question in at least two places (thread602-1251356) - suggest you post under just one heading in future.

Yes I'm sorry for that I realised too late that there was a forum just for hard drive issues. My apologies.
