Hello,

I have only minor experience configuring switches. I can fumble my way around by reading the help topics for each of the commands.

I need to set up a new switch on our network. The current switch and the new switch are both a Catalyst 2950. I don't have any experience setting up a switch so I am wondering if it is possible to just copy a configuration from one switch to a hard drive and then put that configuration file on the other switch. I know I would have to change the IP address of the switch and can probably figure out how to do that. I guess bascially how would I copy the config file of one switch to another?

Thanks soooo much for any help.

You can install some TFTP server software on a PC/server that you know the switch can see at an IP level. There's plenty of free TFTP servers out there such as Solarwinds TFTP server (
Once the TFTP server is installed and configured, you can copy your existing running config to the TFTP server using the "copy running tftp" command on the switch - then fill in the information requested such as IP address of TFTP server etc.

To then copy that config to another switch, type "copy tftp running" on the new switch and again fill in the blanks.

Or the other way is just save a copy of the current switch config into a text file and just cut and paste into the new switch changing the ip address and defaULT gateway . also check to makes sure you have the vlans you need on the new switch .

Great advice guys, but how does one copy the config to a text file.

Thanks!

Very easy! You do a show run and copy it off the screen. Then you paste it onto the other router. It's as easy as copy and paste.

One can also setup a tftp server on the switch as I remember and copy it straight from there, but that's getting a bit advanced.

Thanks HD Dan..lol

I can get it to copy off the page, but where do I acutally go and paste the whole configuration into the other router. As far as I was aware you could only alter the coniguration one setting at a time..

Thanks!!!

you must be in configuration mode.

switch>en
switch#config t
switch#(config) PASTE TEXT HERE

This will work when you have devices that are the same. This will work as well when devices are different but the technology is the same. AAA, syslogging, ect ect.

Like viper said check your vlans or if using the same you can set up VTP to exchange vlan databases.

Note: If you are using hyperterminal, you have an option to capture text. This will allow you do a show run and save the output to a text file.

lol... vlan ( virtual lan?) vtp (virtual transfer protocol?) like I said..a programmer doing a networkers job :)

LOL VTP is vlan transfer protocol. IT replicates the vlan database from a server to a client. VLAN is virtual lan. You could run into connectivity problems if your vlans are screwed up. By default though everything is in vlan 1
