When I try to copy a file of a Network Server I keep getting this error:

"Specified Network Name is nolonger available"

Even though I browsed for the file first and it began to copy. It gets to about 3% done and then comes back with this error.

Any help would be much appreciated as I've been here now for 14 hours and I'm hoping to get it sorted before I go home!

Thanks guys.

Peter

Upon further investigation I can see that some clients are running in 'mixed mode' and some in 'Hybrid mode'. The ones running in Hybrid mode are not effected.

What is this mode business about? & how can I change from mixed to hybrid?

I have come to this conclusion from ipconfig /all which is where this mentioned.

I really need a solution to this!! Please help!

Thanks

Yea, I get this as well. I disable/enable the LAN connection at my workstation and everything starts working again. I'm using Win2000Pro and just wiped and reloaded yesterday. All up to date on everything from Microsoft.

I notice that the issue seems to come up with I copy LOTS of MBs from the server to my desktop.

The Server that is giving you the error message what os does it have, I.E. WinNT 2000 ETC? What mode is it in? Second the computer you are trying to copy to same questions. What OS and wbat Mode?

Mixed Mode in Windoes 2000 allows for any Server (no matter what OS) to access a Servers to Access Win 2000 Servers. Hybride mode not sure here, have not heard of that one.

Server is running Win2000 Server
Workstation is running Win2000 Pro

I'm got really convinced that the problem lies at the server.

Once I get the error, all network communications is shutdown from my workstation. For example, Internet access is no longer available.

If is DISABLE and then ENABLE the network link on the local workstation, all is back fine with the world.

I'm wondering perhaps if it is a network card issue.

I'm also running Win2K Adv Server & Win2kPro clients. Server running in Mixed mode, clients in Hybrid mode.

Most PC's don't have an issue - just one or two. I have lmhosts & wins running on the server because the server seems to be suffering from 'disjointed dns'. I would imagine that Netbios should be able to patch the holes left by this? and indeed it appears to work on most machines.

What I can't understand is how all is well when I begin transfering a file across the network but before I finish it says "Specified Network Name is nolonger available" but it has often copied half the file by then (I'm transfering files around 30MB or folders full of documents which can sometimes be much larger)

I beleive my network card is reliable as the broadband is lightning fast and large files can be downloaded through it via the internet without a problem.

Any ideas - is it related to disjointed dns? If so, is there anyway to fix that without rebuilding the whole server?

Thanks

There is really a simple solution that tends to work in these situations... Map the share you are accessing to a drive letter, and try it again...

Matt

Nah, I map the drive as this server is needed all the time. Problem still occurs ----- oops, didn't fail this morning for some reason.

Our drives are also already mapped by loggon script - drive 'm'

So weird though, it is almost as though the server name changes halfway through transfering a file - this is actually happening after connection has been established and transfer is well underway.

However, one more development today. One PC which was previously OK and was running in Hybrid mode is now suddenly not OK! and is running in mixed mode?? I can't understand why? Is there anything I can do to force Hybrid mode as this seems to work best?

These machines have static IP addresses because they need 2 ip addresses (192.168.0.x - for Internet & 141.92.1.x for LAN) therefore I guess the DHCP server can't set what mode they run in?

Thanks for perservering guys. It is appreciated!

Here is what I have found will stop me cold in my tracks with this exact problem.

Make 100% sure that the hard drive label and the share name are not the same. This will confuse the OS and cause you a lot of headaches. Once I finally ran this problem down I was so mad that it was so simple.

When I had this trouble, I had labeled the hard drive "Games" and I had a share on the same drive called "Games" and everytime I tried to get into this folder or copy from it I would get this error.

I hope that helps, if not, good luck!

the machines concerned here are running Win2K and all the machine names follow the same format so Idon't think that's the solution here. Hope it works for you though.

just a few days ago, i had the same problem.
copying bigger files from windows2000srv to winxppro failed in cause of the same error.

The following solved the problem (its still working!)
1. Check out the connection type and speed (full/half-duplex). dont use the "auto"mode
2. use a vendor-specific driver (3c905ctx runs much better and faster with 3com-drivers)
3. if it still doesnt work, change nic/patchcable (i didnt need to do this)

good luck
