when you try to copy and paste(drag/drop) something from another box like a file server to your local box, what protocol does it use? how does it do it locally? does it just change the NTFS master tables?

netbios-ssn (port 139)

and

microsoft-ds (port 445)

as for NTFS, not sure what you're asking?

thank you for the network answer but what i mean for ntfs, is on a local box. say i want to copy a file from one folder in c:\ to a new folder in c:\winnt or d:\. does it just change the master file table in NTFS?

In general, files/Directories inherit permissions from the parent object. The exception to this rule occurs only in the instance that you're describing, when you move an object to a different folder on the same volume. In this case, the original permissions are retained.
