As part of our backup plan, I need to start copying network files over to an external hard drive. Currently I backup to tape nightly and I would like to then run a script (or whatever) that will copy all files that I need onto the external hard drive.

Does anyone have any recommendations or warnings??

You can use xcopy within a batch file and execute the batch file as a scheduled job.

If a file is in use, is xcopy still able to copy it over?

No, you would need an open file manager to allow any command or software to do this. In addition to xcopy scripts, I like a software called Double Image ( There is a new version that isn't quite ready for release, but its really nice. Simple to use, easy to schedule, and is much quicker that creating your xcopy scripts.

For nt/2000/xp, xcopy /c, will allow the command to continue copying files, even if they are in use.

Hi there,

All of the above mentioned could work, I got my hands on robocopy.exe which is a MS 2000 tool and so far I am very happy, alot of good comments on forums.

I use it to do the same as what you are planning to do, althou I have to do it over a VPN connection.

The nice thing is you copy/write the data to a CD or copy it to the external drive, make sure your file structsure is right, then write a bacth file with the command your going to use, set it up so it would update the file's when there is a newer or changed one, Bod's your Uncle, the replication (coping) should work.

Good luck , hope this came handy

Cheers
