Currently on our network we have a small server which runs windows server 2000, SBS 2000 & exchange 2000!

However the server is pretty old and i dont like the sound of the hard drive, sounds like its on its way out!

I am looking to copy the contents of the hard drive on to a brand new drive!

I would also like to upgrade the hardware(brand new server) and also upgrade to server 2003!

could some knowledgeable character please instruct on the most efficient way to go about this process?

Thank you!

Steven

If you are going to change the hardware, Ghosting is definitely out, as you'd get to many hardware changes for Windows to like it and run.

I would place the new hard drive as a slave onto the server, and start copying everything you need manually, while the hard drive still works.

That way you have more control of what you copy, and what doesn't need to be moved.

You can also take this opportunity to tidy up anything that has become messy on the drive, while you are copying.

What vacunita says is very good advice...gotta give the star as it is what I would say

Acronis products are good for cloning.

here is an alternate

zero the new drive

clone the old drive to the new drive

use the new drive only.
buy the new hardware and do a repair/reinstall/upgrade to 2003 to the new server.
you may have to do a repair/reinstall first using the windows 2000 then upgrade to 2003

if you have not done this you need to slipstream the service packs to the server cd images and create updated images/CD's

this holds true for all your older server licenses.

Thanks for the info guys!

so would you recommend cloning the drive!

if i were to copy them manually, can account details for SBS and exchange be copied over without any problems and then importd in to a fresh installation of server 2000?

As I said cloning is not very practical in this instance and even if you do clone, you'd still need to import all the settings you mention into the new OS, so pretty much doing double work.

I'm not too familiar, with exchange and SBS, but i would think you can transfer the accounts from one to the other.

Here these results might help you out:

Easiest method is to put your new hard disk in to the server and configure it as a software raid 1 mirror in disk manager. The server will then mirror all contents of the main disk, to the new one.

I have attempted to mirror, followed all instructions on the Microsoft website, but for some reason the data storage on the two hard drives do not match up!

does anyone have a simple guide to doing this as microsofts doesn't seem to work!

Thanks
