Copious failed queries in WINS

My WINS servers are both logging considerably more failed queries than successful ones. Technet suggests that the failures are due to network services that are broadcast requests, but are not intended for WINS response such as, an NBT broadcast request for JSPNRMPTGSBSSDIR which is a RAS request. This is the only example given in technet. Even so I do not believe this to be my problem as the ratio of failed queries to successful is approximately 5:1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone even have a suggestion as to where to look?

Good question...Two Ideas...

One, make sure WINS is configured properly..in respect to replication..THen make sure you workstation are set to use wins and are not using information from a lmhost file. They could be looking for a resource that doesn't any more. Make sure there are entrys for all items using netbios and wins. Add static entries if you have to.
One possiblility is that the pc's are looking for a program or file on a resource that doesn't exist any more and thus the reason for somany failed lookups.
The second suggestion is to bring up a secondary wins server and move all your clients to it, I'm hoping you have DHCP which would make this easier. Wathc the activity for failures, if none. make it your primary wins and make the former primary WINS your secondary..

I mentioned replicaton earlier because a pc may broadcast fora server that is register with wins but on antoher subnet or not register with the WINS server it's broadcsting to.
There are alot of issues with win's. Good luck.

i just noticed in my wins that i have about 6100 queries received and only 498 successful. Is this huge number of failures a signal that something is hughely wrong? I havnt experienced any network problems, but i am concerned at the number of wins failures.

I have a PDC and a BDC both configured as wins servers...

all workstations are set up to use the primary and backup wins servers. I have about 200 workstations, mostly NT4 with a large number of win95 workstations. Im also attaching to a netware 3.22 server so we're running the ms netware client and ipx/spx as well as tcp/ip..

We are having the exact same issue - and there is very little reading material on this. We've tried to bring up another WINS server with the same results. One thing we've noticed that there is a Windows2000 machine with SAMBA installed acting as the MASTER BROWSER. We suspect that browsing and WINS registrations are related and that the presence of the SAMBA on the MASTER BROWSER may be having an adverse effect on the WINS querries. Suggestions?
