Simultaneous REPOST from link!

There are a few cool tools that I have run into throughout my CCNA R&S and now my CCNA Security studies!

CCNA R&S
----------------
PacketTrap PT360 (FREE Windows)
This software costed $700+ a couple of months ago but is now FREE.. It says Try Now but after you d'load and install run it and select help (top left) and license! You will get a free 20 yr license! This is used by CISCO, Miscrosoft, the military etc! The tools included are extraordinary for a free utility of this caliber so have fun! I just started working with most of the crypto stuff but it is part of the CCNA Security/CCSP track! Well, an understanding at least!
GNS3
PACKET TRACER 4 and 5 (Awesome Simulator.. Thanks CISCO.. Must be Academy Connection student or prior)

CCNA Security + other Security (Stuff for the LAB!!!) Much of this stuff does not belong to CISCO but it will help you learn the ins and outs of the protocols and what they do in the absence of CISCO options! Plus keep you safe while you play.. ahem.. I mean learn! LoL I highly suggest purchasing a server or two for your CISCO lab! Compliments it well.. I bought a Dell PowerEdge 6650! Plus a Sun SunFire VT-120 and a VT-100!
---------------------
(Just for fun.. I love CISCO though!)
(Free DynamicDNS that will let you play with NAT etc without a static IP)
(This is a future project)
(This is also a future project)

SECURITY TOOLS FOR SELF-AUDIT:
Nice list available here! Thanks to Fyodor! -----------
Personal Faves for playing around on the home network!
(Best IMHO Pen-testing distro with many good tools.. hundreds)
(Ubuntu's Pen-Tester)

CRYPTO:
-------------
(Create your own crypto lab when you get to that portion of your studies)
Already listed OpenSSL and OpenVPN!

PERSONAL:
-----------------
(PuTTy.. nuff said! Haven't invested in SecureCRT yet!)
(TFTP Server)
(Syslog)
(Browser)
(Icon Editor.. hey it's cool and free)
(Similar to VMWare but I like it better for home use!)
(An unfortunate necessity!)
(Linux apps on Windows)
(The opposite of the above)

MOST IMPORTANT: RFCs
----------------------------
(Can d'load all RFCs from here or just update from lat 7 or 30 days!)

SITES: (Not an exhaustive list.. LoL)
----------
CLN of course! LoL
(Open Source)
(ditto.. LoL)

WEB DESIGN:
---------------------
(For ideas)

OPERATING SYSTEMS: (FREE for every-day use! PT systems are listed above)
------------------------------------
(Future project)
(Yet to get a Stage One install to compile! LoL But I will.. Definitely user error!)
(I had to!)
(Not an OS per say.. actually a hypervisor but awesome.. Going to install on the 6650.. No worries about BluePill ( ) with this installed!)

OK.. I think this about does it! At least I can't think of anything else!

(Free DynamicDNS that will let you play with NAT etc without a static IP)

No---it's dot org, not dot com.

Burt

Which packet trap do i dl? There are 3 different deals, and the 360 I installed needs a license key to continue setup...:(

Burt

Thanks Burt.. Changed from DynDNS.com to .org but realized that they are the same afterwards.. If you visit the dyndns.org site it lists dyndns.com in the advertisement on the top tight!

I had BETTER get a STAR for this! LoL

But after the setup completes, you run it and it gives you three options---you must select one to continue. They are register, login, or enter license key---there IS no help! You must select one of the three to even hit next! No left, right, up, down...I just registered, and it tells me that I can't use a public email address...

Burt

Here's your star.

Here's your sign.

Burt

Then use a private email addy! They don't share your email! They email you the license! LoL

They weren't doing this when I downloaded it so I used my gmail but a friend from CLN verified what you just said and he said you get the license emailed! Now go install it so I can pen test your network already! LoL Just kidding! But install it and give me my star! LoL

It never emailed me a (a lot of rated-R adjectives go here) license! Thanks for giving me credit for having a little common sense...lol.
They must have recently changed from dot org to dot com---when you enter dot org, it changes it in the address bar to dot com. Did not do that 3 months ago...

The only email I got was "Thanks for downloading blablabla. Any questions, call 1-800-you-dummy, or email us at didn'tyoutakereadinginschool@youidiot.com"

No license key or anything like it.

Burt

Then you mis-typed your email addy! I just installed it again on another PC! You sure that you can spare that sign? Want it back? LoL

Seriously, download and install it.. when prompted select register new account.. Put in the 'correct' email addy! LoL And they WILL email you.. If not then check your Spam Folder because they sent it! Once you check that email and activate it you will have a license until 2029! Enjoy!

It was the correct email addy---how could it have emailed me "Thanks for downloading"???
The "here's your sign" has nothing to do with anything, really...Tad said "here's your star" and it reminded me of it...lol...had to say it.
Anyway, I will try it again. Thing is, I can't check my email until I am at work---Vista, Home Premium won't let you RDP, and there is no free VNC for Vista Home either...:(

Burt

Good news Burt!

This is an excerpt from the following site:
"To achieve best performance under Windows 2000, Windows XP and above"

TightVNC is pretty nice and recommended as Top 5 remote tools on the LifeHacker site here:

I have NOT installed it on Vista yet but I DID have UltraVNC going for a while! I have since formatted all Windows Vista PCs but I know that it works!

Billy,

I spent a lot of time at that honeynet site about 2 years ago when i was researching my hackers CD - VERY COOL SITE and it has lots of great advice about NOT setting up a "honeynet" or "honeypot" unless you are ready to deal with some "stinging" and very mad bee's when they find out that they have been tricked!!

Bottom line was to think twice about setting up any "traps" for hackers :) but it is a good site!!

E.A. Broda
CCNA, CCDA, CCAI, Network +

Good advice! The majority of stuff that is going to hit the honeynet will usually be bots etc. (very few actual people) since the type of net I would set up would only be online for a few hours at as time! Just open up IIS and VPN on an unpatched Windows 2003 server! LoL Remember that this sort of design is strictly for learning purposes not to 'catch' anyone! There is a good article about it over at irongeek and a similar article in a past 2600 issue!

But you do make a good point and it will be some time before I play with honeynet! Have too many things going on with the certification side of things to deviate too far! Burt is right about that!

Now the alternate usage of honeynet (inside your own private subnet/vlan) would be a good use of the tool. It's not like anyone could reasonably be angry because you were protecting your own network. And as far as mine goes all anyone has to do is ask and I would happily give them permission to pen test! (Although I can not speak for either my/their ISPs nor anyone in between) But that is what hacking is all about in my opinion! You agree or still taming bees? LoL J/K
