Okay kind folks, I have another question for you: I have IE set to delete all Internet temp files when I exit. I have attempted to save the cookies I want on my system by saving them in the separate cookie folder in C:\Windows. Trouble is, Web sites do not access their cookies from this folder. I've tried copying and pasting cookies I want enabled back into Temp Internet folder when I know I'm about to visit a site that requires its cookie, but Explorer won't let me do this.

I'm adamant about keeping Temp Internet folder clean of garbage and it's simply too much work to go through and selectively delete, leaving that handful of cookies I want kept. Is there any way around this nuisance?

Postscript: (I have a cookie manager ap on my system, and I've also stored in it the cookies I want to keep. But again, it does not effect Web sites needing to detect their cookies on my system.)

Instead of having IE delete the stuff, get TweakUI and have it empty the temp folder. It will leave any cookies intact. Cheers,
Jim

Um...I do have TweakUI 1.33 installed on my computer. I've just gone through every tab and I cannot see where it empties out Temp Internet folder. Would you care to enlighten me pleeze?

Larkspr,

You might be able to change the location in th registry:
backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

Right-click on the Cookies entry, choose modify and type in the new path.
Also under these keys, if applicable:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProfileReconciliation\Cookies

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache\Special Paths\Cookies

Hello Mr. Reghakr, the registry expert. Let me try to understand what you are intending that this should accomplish. If I were to modify my registry as you suggest does that mean that the URL's I visit will be able to access/detect their precious cookies not from inside the Temp Internet folder but from the Cookies folder in C:\Windows? (This Cookies folder by the way was always there -- I didn't put it there.)

If that is what you mean me to accomplish then you will have to walk me through it very carefully. You're talking to someone who is terrified of tampering with their registry! :-0

I'll test it myself and post a script in a little while.

So returning to Comtech's suggestion, can someone please tell me how to empty Temp Internet folder using TweakUI?

Like you, I can't find where TweakUI clears Temp internet files. Do I understand your issue correctly, you have a few cookies that you want to keep, but don't want to keep the ones that are added during browsing without your permission?

If you have saved the ones you want to keep to another directory, why not clear the cookies folder and copy back the ones you want to keep. This could be automated in a batch file if it's too boring to do this regularly.

If I haven't grasped the plot, please be generous and explain it one more time.

Hope this is of some help

Yes Paulwood, you have it exactly. I've copied and pasted the cookies I want to keep into a separate folder. But when I go to copy them back into Temp Internet folder, it won't let me -- "paste" is grayed out in the edit menu and Control V doesn't work either. I've figured out that the Web sites seem to access/detect their cookies only from this folder.

I already have Cookie Wall installed on my system, and although I've moved the desired cookies into the "Cookies to Keep" section of this app, once again, the Web sites do not appear to access their cookies from this location.

Where can I put my handful of cookies that I want to keep so that Web sites will be able to access them?

Many thanks for your help.

Location of Cookies File in Internet Explorer
\%windir%\Cookies\ <username>@<site name>.txt
The location of cookies can also change on computers running Windows 95/98 if User Profiles are enabled, so that they are stored in the \%windir%\profiles\username\cookies directory.

How to Set and Customize Cookies Settings in Internet Explorer

HTTP Cookies

I have exactly the same issue as you do.

I wish I had a simple solution, but because the Temporary Internet Files is not a standard folder (as you found out), I do not know of a way to fool it without an external program. Take a look at Amnesia which claims all manner of things
I haven't used it, but if it does what it says it does, and I quote - "Performs IE cache/cookie management using standard Microsoft routines, ensuring all files are maintained correctly" - it could be what you need.

Good luck!
