Converting Signed Text Data to Currency

I’m trying to convert signed a text field from a mainframe file to currency depending upon the sign. The sign will either be a “+” for positive amounts or “-“ for negative amounts within a calculated query. For example, I have a test field called TAX which contains 50.00.

Record 1:
Tax
+000000005000

Record 2:
Tax
-000000005000

Can anyone help?
