I've been given a Quark file -- a six page newsletter designed for print -- my client wants it converted to a single html page. I can't make the quark file long enough. Is there a limit to the length of a web layout in quark?

Hi baguette
It does look like there is a limit to the text in a Quark html file. Seems like I got about 9 pages of 8.5 x 11 inch pages.
I am running Quark 6.5 on IMac with os 10.4 and I would have to start a new document and choose Web for the layout.
Then I would have to copy and paste the text and pics in place, then export as html.
It doesn't seem like I can open a reg Quark document and convert it to an html page.
Maybe you could suggest making a PDF instead, that would be just as easy to view online as well as downloading and printing.

Hope this helps

Try smashing down a control or command key to get the 'export HTML' function from that menu.

Ideally, you should find some other way to compose the web page. HTML export from Quark is not so great.

Thanks for the input. I heard back from Quark and their web pages are limited to 3455 pixels in length.

I got the newsletter to be two pages linked together. I had hoped I could then change it to one page in the html, but you're right jimoblak, html export from Quark is not so great. Looking at the code for the previews newsletters on their website (done by another vendor), I don't think there's anyway it was done from Quark -- too clean and pretty.

Pdf has been suggested and denied, unfortunately. Hopefully they'll be fine with two pages instead of one.

Oops. I meant to say PREVIOUS newsletters. That's what I get for not PREVIEWING my post. Can't edit posts here after they're submitted?

When I open a 1 page Quark 6.5 document on my IMac with OS 10.4.6 and try to export as an HTML document the HTML option is shaded out meaning it is unavailable.
However I can hightlight text and do a save text as HTML and that seems to be somewhat usable.
Do you think I might be missing an extension or something? I thought I had created a print document before and saved as an HTML but now I am not so sure.

Sorry. I do not do this often so I had the keys mixed up. On Windows QuarkXPress 7 beta, I press the CTRL & SHIFT keys to display the Export HTML option in the File menu. You can find a comparable hot-key combination on Mac and in previous versions of QuarkXPress.

Nothing needs to be highlighted/selected to do this kind of export.

Sorry but I don't see any hot Key Combination or any other way to export a Quark 6.5 print document as an HTML file using Quark 6.5 on the Mac with OS 10.4.6.
I only have the tools and extensions that come with Quark 6.1 and the update to 6.5.
The component I have installed is:
HTML Export.qrc 6.50r0 All 6.x Active
If you find a way for me to export a normal Quark document straight to HTML with one click, please let know.

Depending on your setup, either CTRL-click or SHIFT-CTRL-click anywhere in your document to bring up the menu, and choose Export > HTML... Try doing it away from any object on your page if you see a different menu.

I know it doesn't make much sense that the option is unavailable in the main menu, but can be accessed from this pop-up menu

Quark doesn't make this shortcut too easy because it is not a good practice for the designer. One should only do it if desperate. QuarkXPress works best with HTML output if you start with a web layout. Converting print layouts to HTML output is messy.

I just tried the condtrol click on a Quark document and got a pop up menu, but it does not include option to export as HTML or even save as.
If you guys can open a Quark print document in Quark 6.5 on the Macindtosh with os x and save or export it direct as an HTML then you must have an extension or utility or something that i don't have.

That shouldn't be the case; this functionality is available straight out of the box. What options do you have in the pop-up menu? It should be something like:

Code:
Fit in Window
Actual Size
------------
Preferences...
------------
Save
Print...
Export
        >> [b]HTML...[/b]
        >> Layout as PDF
.
.
.

Does that resemble your menu in any way? If it's very different, make sure you CTRL-click on a blank area of your document, or even on the pasteboard. Otherwise it could be giving you a menu that's context-sensitive towards an object you might be clicking on.

Hi blueark
I am assuming you are talking Mac with OS X.
If so you are right, Control click on the pasteboard gives me a menu with the option to export layout as PDF or HTML or I can click under File and get the same options.
However the HTML option is shaded out in both cases, meaning it is not available.
I can start a new project and choose Web rather than Print and make a page then I can go to File then Export and export as an HTML file, and at this point the Save to PDF is shaded out.

Hmmm, that's bizarre. I've just tried it on two different computers, both Macs with OS X. In both cases, the menu item under File is shaded out, but the pop up menu is fine, so I'm not sure why it's not working on yours. Well, there's always copy & paste I suppose...
