We need to convert our present PDC to a stand-alone server.<br>The official Microsoft position is that this cannot be done<br>without re-installing NT Server.&nbsp;&nbsp; However, we are running SQL Server on this machine (its the reason for wanting to convert) and we do not want to have to re-install SQL Server.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does anyone know if this can be done and how to do it?&nbsp;&nbsp; As an interim step, we plan to bring a new PDC on line<br>and demote the current one to BDC.

What is the problem with installing SQL Server on a PDC?

I have done this myself and now need to install MS Digital Dashboard which wont work because the server is PDC... I need to demote PDC as well but dont understand why there are so many problems in doing this.. Im on Win2000 - is it easier here than in WinNT?

It's easier to convert from a domain controller to a member server in Win2K. Just run dcpromo. Piece of cake.

As far as running SQL on a domain controller, it's not a problem with the exception that SQL is a PIG! SQL will use every resource available to it - leaving very little for picky little things like authenticating users, handling replication, etc.

It's always best to install high-end server-based applications (like SQL, Exchange, etx.) on a memeber server set aside for that task. - Bill

Thanks for that. Is there a problem demoting a PDC if it is the only server in the domain. Do you need a PDC in a domain or can you have just a standalone server?

Thanks,
Tony.

Hehe yes. If you have no other DC's on the network , then your network then becomes a workgroup, not to mention authentication will never occur. :) Install another server real quick, make it a BDC. You can either force synchronization or let it sit for 24 hours (best bet) then promote the new BDC to PDC, and demote your original PDC to BDC and eventually wipe it clean for your new application server :)

You can try looking on the Internet for UPromote. That seems to be the only way to make it a member server. The site is . I have not tried this but it may be the only way not to reinstall the server.

I'm assumming your running NT4.0, if so your statement is correct regarding what Microsoft says. Once a pdc always a pdc unless you rebuild it. there is no way to demote you have to rebuild. i would suggest you load sql on another server then move your databases.
hope this helps
