Converting mutiple workbooks to PDF

Hi, first time poster on this forum.
Using Adobe Acrobat v8 standard edition and excel 2003.

Just now we have a single excel spreadsheet file (workbook) containing 18 separate sheets which we can and do convert to PDF format successfully. One of the sheets in our EXCEL workbook contains a list of hyperlinks which the user can use to quickly jump to the other sheets in the workbook. Again this works as expected when we convert
to PDF. Our problem is that we want to do a similar thing for multiple excel files (workbooks). Again each of the workbooks will contain multiple sheets. The difference this time is that we want to have one sheet in one of the workbooks that will contain hyperlinks to enable
the user to jump to any of the sheets in any of the other workbooks. Essentially we need a way to convert multiple workbooks to one PDF in one go. Converting to multiple PDF's and then combining wont work because of the way we want the hyperlinks to work.

You have two Options I can think of:

Combine the Excel Workbooks before converting to PDF
or
Convert to PDF and combine in Acrobat (fix the links after converting)

The reason you can convert and combine at the same time, is that Acrobat has no way to know what page a hyperlink will land on if the conversion has not occurred yet.

How many Excel files with how many worksheets are you talking about?

Probably talking about 6 separate workbooks, each containing up to 18 separate sheets.

I know there is some kind of programming language available for PDF but have never used it. Would this be an option to
a) automate the combining of separate PDFS to one large PDF and
b) automate the sorting out of the links?

If so, any pointers/help would be appreciated
