Does anyone know of a low cost gadget (that I could buy or build) that could be connected between an old rotary dialling telephone and the phone line to enable old "loop" dialling rotary phones to work on a tone dialling (only) line?

Even though you want to go in the reverse direction than most of the converters, you could check TelTone™ Corp's website and see if they make a "pulse-to-tone" converter of some sort or call them and ask them.

What kind of line are you using that only takes Touch-Tone™ input?

Smart 1 is a pain because you need to create a whole dialing plan. Most antique phone collectors find it a pain in the but. Plus there are numerous versions so finding the right manual takes time.

I am curious what sort of phone line you have that does not have pulse dialing. Is it from a real phone company or is it VoIP or form a cable company.

If it is a real phone company you should be able to get them to enable pulse.

Anyway, the easiest answer is to go to Mike Sandman and get his CID6K.

Go here and scroll down about 1/3 of the way:

Many thanks the "PULSE TO TONE CONVERTER" (sandman) one look ideal (if a little expensive for my needs). To answer the question about phone companies, over the next few years BT in the UK are rolling out a new digital phone system (21CN) for standard customers that only accepts pulse dialling (this has started and will replace all old lines within 8 years). I collect and sell Antique rotary "pulse dialling" phones Antique Telephones so I need a low cost solution to keep these old phones working.

The Smart 1 is good for 2 to 6 lines depending on the flavor and can be had rather economically and once set up is rather bulletproof.

Also I think Bakelite needs to point out he is in the UK by the sounds. So will need to be BABT approved, otherwise it will be illegal to connect to the network.

There is a mailing list for "Telephone Collector's International" on Yahoo Groups, called "singingwires". The TCI homepage, with a link to the mailing list is
Currently, there is a member who has designed and is selling a pulse to DTMF converter for $47, and has good reviews.

Since you are a fellow antique telephone collector, you should check out the list, and perhaps contact the member selling the converters.

I am a member of TCI and the box this guy is selling is the same as the box Mike Sandman is selling.
